The mission of the AFT Washington Classified Council is to advise and guide the executive board on classified issues by sharing knowledge and experience and to listen to and communicate with members to empower them to have a voice in their union, their workplace, and their communities.

Announcing our workshops for Classified Conference 2021

Vaccines: Personal and Public Health Perspectives

This workshop is designed to inform participants about the physiological effects of the COVID 19 vaccine, possible side effects and the historical significance of vaccine hesitancy in marginalized communities. There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions of the presenters following the workshop.

Classified Conference 2021: Growing Together, Growing Stronger

We will be gathering together as public education workers at this year’s Classified Conference with the theme Growing Together, Growing Stronger on Saturday, March 13, 2021, marking the anniversary of the closing of preK-12 school buildings throughout Washington State. This past year has brought challenges, mourning, awareness, and tragedy to many of us. Despite the immense trials we faced this past year, we know that we our work is essential and that our locals have grown stronger through the shared experience.


Classified Conference 2020: The Backbone of Public Education

Every year the Classified Council of AFT Washington, made up of leadership from our Classified PreK-12 locals, host a professional development conference to celebrate the important work classified staff do to support public education in Washington state.

We are excited to present this year’s conference which coincides with Washington State Classified Week 2020, celebrated this year during the week of March 15-21.

2017 Professional Development Conference for PreK-12 and Higher Ed Members

Registration is closed for our annual professional development conference for classified members which will be held on Saturday, March 18 from 8:30 AM to 2 PM at Giaudrone Middle School, 4902 So. Alaska St., Tacoma.

Another Good Turnout for Classified Conference

A record 88 classified members attended this year’s professional development conference on Saturday, March 14, 2015 in Tacoma. The theme was "Fighting Forward, Making a Difference Every Day."


Workshops were held on anger and conflict management, early brain development and the impact of trauma, how to distinguish gripes from grievances, responding to challenging behaviors in at-risk youth, and working with children who have autism. [read more and see photos of the conference]

AFT National PSRP Information and Resources

The Paraprofessionals and School-Related Personnel (PSRP) division of the American Federation of Teachers represents more than 360,000 school support staff in K-12 districts, colleges and universities throughout the country. These jobs include office employees, custodians, maintenance workers, bus drivers, instructional paraprofessionals, food service workers, school nurses and health aides, technicians, groundskeepers, secretaries, bookkeepers, mechanics, special education assistants and hundreds of other job titles.
